In 1973, the Nancy colloquium on teaching and cinema, led by Professor Guy Borelli, initiated a long-term process of reflection involving researchers and filmmakers such as Jean Rouch, André Delvaux and Jean L’Hôte.

In 1984, the University of Nancy inaugurated a Bachelor’s degree in cinema.

In 1990, ministerial decree no. 90-537 of June 22, 1990 founded the Institut Européen de Cinéma et d’Audiovisuel, which inaugurated its teaching and practice facilities in 1994.

IECA’s patron is actress Claudia Cardinale.
